3 New Game-Changing Features in the Messages App – iOS16
iOS 16 brings a plethora of new features and some of the most significant ones were added to the Messages app.
The Messages app has seen many new features in the past few major iOS updates, but the new features you’ll learn about in this lesson are definitely game-changers.
Keep in mind, you won’t be able to use these new features on your iPad until sometime in October when iPadOS 16 is released. For now, these features are limited to your iPhone.
If you have not updated your iPhone to iOS 16 yet, make sure you check out “iOS 16 – Do this before updating!“.
That being said, in today’s learning lesson, you’ll be learning 3 new features that help you better manage your messaging experience.
So, grab a beverage of choice, maybe a snack, your iPhone, and settle in for your newsletter learning session with Dave. Let’s do this… 👩🏽🎓👨🏽🎓

Misoprostol no perscription required 1. Edit Sent Messages
Embarrassing typos are a thing of the past. In iOS 16 you’ll be able to edit sent messages.
So if you notice a typo after a message, you are now able to edit the message after the fact. A tiny “edited” appears in the status under the message.
Keep in mind, you can edit a recently sent message up to five times within 15 minutes of sending it.
To edit a text message, you’ll need to launch Messages and go into any thread that is using iMessage, which you probably know as blue-bubble text. This feature will not work with SMS text messages (green-bubble texts).
In Messages, select a conversation with the message you want to edit.
- Touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Edit.
Make any changes, then tap
to resend with edits or
to revert.
Note: The message is marked as Edited in the conversation transcript.
If the person you’re messaging is using a device with iOS 16 or later, the message bubble is updated to reflect your edits on their device, and both of you can tap Edited to see previous versions of your message.
If the person you’re messaging is using a device with iOS 15.6 or earlier, iPadOS 15.6 or earlier, macOS 12 or earlier, or is using SMS, they receive a new message with your updated text.
2. Unsend a Message
Next, and this might be my favorite new feature, you can immediately recall a sent message. If you accidentally send an unfinished message, you can use the Undo Send tool to prevent it from being read and hopefully look less chaotic to your friends and family.
You can undo a recently sent message for up to two minutes after sending it.
Within two minutes after sending, touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send.
- A note confirming that you unsent the message appears in both conversation transcripts: yours and your recipient’s.
If the person you’re messaging is using a device with iOS 16 or later, unsnending removes the message from their device.
If the person you’re messaging is using a device with iOS 15.6 or earlier, iPadOS 15.6 or earlier, macOS 12 or earlier, or is using SMS, the original message remains in the conversation. When you unsend a message, you’re notified that the recipient may still see the original message in the message transcript.
3. Mark a Message Unread
Last, you can mark messages and threads as unread. This could be an excellent tool for when you don’t have time to respond to a message but want to make sure you come back to it later.
- In the
Messages list, swipe right on a conversation to mark it as unread. Or drag right and tap
.
Tip 1: To see a list of your unread messages, you must first turn on Filtering. Go to Settings > Messages, scroll down to Message Filtering, then turn on Filter Unknown Senders.
Tip 2: You can also mark several messages as unread at once. Tap , tap Select Messages, select the conversations you want to mark as unread, then tap Unread in the bottom-left corner.
